Davis Park

Elmhurst Clean & Green, Providence Parks & Recreation Department and Smith Hill Community Development Corporation have formed a partnership to rehabilitate Davis Park, located at the intersection the the Smith Hill and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods.  During 2009, we installed a new playground, opened a community garden with over 25 plots and sponsored a weekly Farmer’s Market in the Fall.  2011 promises to be another great year at the park, as the garden will be expanded and there are many great changes to the physical landscape planned.  The Little League practice field has already been moved, which will maximize its space and utility while opening up a wide swath of land for general recreation and a new walking path has just been installed!  Please see below for some great pictures.

Kaboom! Playground

In March 2009, Smith Hill CDC and our key partners, Elmhurst Clean & Green and the Providence Parks Department received a grant from KaBOOM! and our corporate partner, MetLife, to install a new playground at Davis Park. More than a grant, the KaBOOM! model also includes a large community role in the design and installation of the playground.

This project kicked off with a Design Day at Capitol Square at Smith Hill on Thursday, May 7th, 2009 where children from the community designed their dream playground. The following slideshow features the kids at work as well as a few great designs.

On Saturday, June 27th, over 350 volunteers from The Smith Hill and Mt. Pleasant neighborhoods and MetLife participated in Build Day.  The day culminated in a ribbon-cutting lead by local children and Providence mayor, David Cicilline.

Community Garden

The Community Garden is opening for its third year.  If you are interested in a garden plot, please contact Kelly Smith.  Here are some pictures from the volunteer garden build that took place on May 24th.

Farmers’  Market

In 2009 & 2010 Elmhurst Clean & Green sponsored a Farmer’s Market on each Sunday during the summer.  In 2011, the market is moving to Fargnoli Park, right up the street.
