Environmental Justice

Environmental Justice is defined as the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race, color, national origin, English proficiency, or income with respect to the development, implementation, and enforcement of environmental laws, regulations and practice.

Smith Hill Community Development Corporation is committed to Environment Justice. We express this commitment by engaging in responsible development of potentially hazardous sites and by acting as a conduit of information for the community. We have also been part of a working group designed to increase awareness of potential environmental contaminates.

Rhode Island’s Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is currently drafting a policy designed to insure the responsible development of urban sites.

  • To learn more about the RI DEM’s policy and process to engage the community and the stakeholder process see RI DEM’s website.

If you have any concerns about local contamination, please contact RI DEM through the website listed above, call the DEM offices at (401) 222.6800 or contact the CDC for assistance.
