Of particular note is the renovation of a vacant lot located at 312 Douglas Ave. into a “public” parking lot for use by area residents. Smith Hill Community Development Corporation received a 2003 Preservation Merit Award from Preserve Rhode Island, The Statewide Trust For Heritage Preservation for this renovation due to its unique environmentally friendly design. According to Preserve Rhode Island, the public lot is a “sustainable resource that returns no water of runoff to the city sewer system while beautifying the neighborhood.” Architect, Michael Verrackka’s design included a permeable asphalt paving system that absorbs runoff through the topcoat into the sub-soils without the use of a catch basin. Furthermore, the grading and curb placements are designed to allow additional runoff to feed the surrounding landscape.
