Job Title: Community Leaders Program Assistant, Full Time

Job Overview: The mission of the Institute for Study and Practice of Nonviolence is to teach by word and example the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions.

The Community Leaders Program is the newest youth program at the Institute. The program will hire and train 25 youth alumni from the Institute’s Beloved Community Summer Jobs Program to work as leaders in their community. Youth will work after school and during the summer to conduct nonviolence trainings and organize community-based events, workshops and activities. The Program Assistant will work with the Director of Youth Programs to coordinate and implement all aspects of the Community Leaders Program.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Help develop and plan retreat curriculum for 25 youth
  • Attend and help staff 3-day overnight retreat, February 18, 19 & 20, 2009
  • Assist with and eventually lead program trainings and daily operations
  • Schedule and help conduct youth interviews
  • Supervise youth and all daily activities
  • Create daily agendas and trainings to build the leadership capacity of youth
  • Aid youth with the development and implementation of community-based events, workshops and activities
  • Set personal and professional goals with youth and help them attain those goals
  • Evaluate youth job performance on a monthly basis
  • Communicate and follow up with Streetworkers to ensure violence prevention
  • Communicate regularly about program activities with families and community members
  • Assist with all program and grant reports
  • Perform administrative tasks as needed
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Prepare and recruit for the following program year

Reports to: Director of Youth Programs (Key Relationships with Streetworkers Program Manager, Senior Streetworkers, Office Manager, Director of Training, Youth)

Personal Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and commitment to studying and practicing the principles of nonviolence
  • Previous experience in, and a strong desire to work with, at-risk youth
  • Ability to multi-task and strong organizational skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid computer skills
  • Comfortable working independently, as well as in a collaborative style in a team environment
  • Broad understanding of the complex and varied needs of at-risk youth
  • Experience in event planning helpful
  • Experience in supervising or managing youth employment or development programs helpful and preferred
  • College degree and bi-lingual preferred
