Steel Yard Installs new Trash Recepticals Along Chalkstone and Douglas Avenues.
New trash receptacles have been installed along the Chalkstone Avenue business corridor and Douglas Avenue as part of an ongoing anti-litter initiative in the Smith Hill neighborhood, City Councilman Terrence M. Hassett, Ward 12, has announced.
The barrels, designed by artists from the Steel Yard, are in addition to those that were installed along Smith Street during the spring of 2006 in “an effort to alleviate the unsightly litter in a busy commercial center,” Hassett said. “The installation of trash containers has proven to substantially reduce litter on our streets. Our goal is to furnish these containers in our commercial areas where the potential for litter is the greatest.”
Hassett said that the anti-litter project is being administered by the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation, a neighborhood re-development agency that operates housing and special development projects in the Smith Hill and Mount Pleasant neighborhoods.
“There are so many businesses along Chalkstone Avenue that provide needed services,” said Solomon. “Our goal is to keep the area as clean as possible so that it remains an attractive commercial district.”
The Chalkstone Avenue area is the dividing line between Ward 5 and Ward 12.
“Litter has become a larger concern to our neighborhood residents across the city,” Hassett said. “This initiative will begin to combat the problem.”
