Youth Development

At the Smith Hill CDC, we recognize the importance of providing youth in the neighborhood with programs that can help them grow. That’s why we offer developmental activities that can assist them in their personal, professional, and academic lives!

Youth Resident Activity Program (YouthRAP) became part of the Smith Hill CDC in 2002 and has been a launching pad for many of our programming efforts. Youth residing in Smith Hill CDC’s LIHTC units met on a daily basis to engage with friends after school and interact with adult mentors. The program provided educational activities that increased school attendance and decreased negative outlets. Since YouthRAP’s success, the start of other programs have begun:

Smith Hill CDC Stewardship: A teen employment program that focuses on the needs of participants and community. Cleaning the neighborhood, working at community gardens, and hosting events for children are the roles of the Steward.

The Cornerstone of Smith Hill

Smith Hill CDC is proud to announce the construction of our latest project, The Cornerstone, set to begin in the spring of 2021. The Cornerstone is a live/learn/work/play mixed-use permanent supportive housing and community hub for young adults or transitioning aged youth (TAY). The target tenants for the building are young adults, 18-24, who may have aged out of the foster care system, been victims of domestic-violence, are formerly incarcerated individuals, or members of the LGBTQ community who’ve experienced discrimination. This intentional housing will provide a space where TAY can survive, thrive, and become integral parts of our community. The development will include three floors of single-bedroom units and the opportunity for project-based vouchers assistance. On December 17, 2019, Housing Ministries of New England presented Smith Hill CDC with a $100,000 grant for pre-development costs of The Cornerstone. We are proud to move forward with this project and look forward to cultivating a support system, with the help of our various partners, for transitioning aged youth!
